WATCH Coco (2017)

Coco is a 2017 American 3D computer-animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.Based on an original idea by Lee Unkrich, it is directed by Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina. The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel Rivera who is accidentally transported to the land of the dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family among the living.
The concept for Coco is based on the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead. The film was scripted by Molina and Matthew Aldrich from a story by Unkrich, Jason Katz, Aldrich and Molina. Pixar began developing the animation in 2016; Unkrich and some of the film's crew visited Mexico for inspiration. Composer Michael Giacchino, who had worked on prior Pixar animated features, composed the score. The film's voice cast stars Anthony GonzalezGael García BernalBenjamin BrattAlanna UbachRenée VictorAna Ofelia Murguía, and Edward James Olmos. Coco is the first-ever motion picture with a nine-figure budget to feature an all-Latino cast, with a cost of $175–200 million.
Coco premiered on October 20, 2017, during the Morelia International Film Festival in Morelia, Mexico. It was theatrically released in Mexico the following week, the weekend before Día de Muertos, and became the highest-grossing film of all-time in the country It was released in the United States on November 22, 2017, and has grossed nearly $745 million worldwide. The film received acclaim for its animation, vocal performances, music, emotional story and respect to Mexican culture. The film was chosen by the National Board of Review as the best animated film of 2017, and earned numerous accolades; it won Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("Remember Me"), as well as winning a BAFTA AwardGolden Globe AwardCritic's Choice Movie Award, and Annie Award for the Best Animated Film category.

WATCH The Greatest Showman (2017)

The Greatest Showman is a 2017 American musical drama film directed by Michael Gracey in his directorial debut, written by Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon and starring Hugh JackmanZac EfronMichelle WilliamsRebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. The film is inspired by the story of P. T. Barnum's creation of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the lives of its star attractions.
Principal photography on the film began in New York City in November 2016, and it premiered on December 8, 2017 aboard the RMS Queen Mary 2. The film was released in the United States on December 20, 2017 by 20th Century Fox and has grossed $376 million worldwide.
The Greatest Showman received mixed reviews, with praise for Jackman and the rest of the performances, music, and production value but criticism aimed at the artistic license taken, with some reviewers calling it "faux-inspiring and shallow". At the 75th Golden Globe Awards, the film received nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor – Musical or Comedy for Jackman. For the song "This Is Me", the film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and was nominated for Best Original Song (losing to Remember Me) at the 90th Academy Awards.

WATCH Kimi no na wa / Your Name (2016)

Your Name (Japanese君の名は。 Hepburn: Kimi no Na wa.) is a 2016 Japanese animated romantic drama film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and produced by CoMix Wave Films. The film was produced by Noritaka Kawaguchi and Genki Kawamura, with music composed by Radwimps. Your Name tells the story of a high school girl in rural Japan and a high school boy in Tokyo who swap bodies. The film stars the voices of Ryunosuke KamikiMone KamishiraishiMasami Nagasawa, and Etsuko Ichihara. Shinkai's novel of the same name was published a month before the film's premiere.
Your Name was distributed by Toho. It premiered at the Anime Expo 2016 convention in Los Angeles, California on July 3, 2016, and in Japan on August 26, 2016. It received widespread acclaim from critics, who praised the film for its animation and emotional impact, and was also a major commercial success, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, the 7th-highest-grossing traditionally animated film, the highest-grossing anime and Japanese film and the 5th-highest-grossing non-English film worldwide, with a total gross of more than $355 million. The film won the 49th Sitges Film Festival2016 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, and 71st Mainichi Film Awards for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as receiving a nomination for the 40th Japan Academy Prize for the Best Animation of the Year. A live-action remake is currently in the works.

WATCH Phantom Thread (2017)

Phantom Thread is a 2017 American period drama film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, set in London's couture worldin the 1950s. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis as a couturier living with his sister, played by Lesley Manville. He falls in love with a young waitress, played by Vicky Krieps; the couple's relationship vacillates between affection and distance as they struggle to live with each other's differences. The film was Day-Lewis's final role before reportedly entering retirement.
The film is Anderson's first shot outside the United States, with principal photography beginning in January 2017 in LytheEngland. It was his second collaboration with Day-Lewis, following There Will Be Blood (2007) and his fourth with composer Jonny Greenwood.
Phantom Thread premiered in New York City on December 11, 2017, and was released in the United States on December 25, 2017.The film received critical acclaim, with praise for the performances, Anderson's screenplay and direction, the musical score, and production value; it was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of 2017's top ten films.At the 90th Academy Awards, the film earned six nominations, including Best PictureBest DirectorBest Actor for Day-Lewis, and Supporting Actress for Manville. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, it is a coming-of-age story of a high-school senior (Ronan) and her turbulent relationship with her mother (Metcalf).
Lady Bird premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 1, 2017 and was released in the United States on November 3, 2017 by A24. Gerwig's screenplay and direction and Ronan and Metcalf's performances received praise, and the film has grossed $59 million on a $10 million budget.
Lady Bird was chosen by the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute, and Time as one of the top 10 films of the year. At the 90th Academy Awards, it earned five nominations: Best PictureBest Actress for Ronan, Best Supporting Actress for Metcalf, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. At the 75th Golden Globe Awards, Lady Bird won for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Ronan), and was nominated for two more. It was also nominated for three British Academy Film Awards.
